STATE-TRAIT ANXIETY INVENTORY (STAI)
Purpose: Differentiate between state and trait anxiety in high school students and adults
Age range: 14 to 69 years
Admin: Individual or group
Admin time: 10 minutes
The STAI provides clinicians with the ability to differentiate between the temporary condition of “state anxiety” and the more general and long-standing qualities of “trait anxiety” in adults. The State Anxiety scale evaluates feelings of apprehension, tension, nervousness, and worry, which increase in response to physical danger and psychological stress. The Trait Anxiety scale is ideal for screening high school and college students, military recruits, and others for anxiety problems, and for evaluating the immediate and long-term outcome of psychotherapy, counseling, behavior modification, and drug treatment programs.
Test booklet contains 40 items with a hand-scorable answer sheet and a scoring key.
Clients rate items on a 4-point rating scale; items are written at a 6th-grade reading level.
Normative tables for working adults, high school students, college students, and military recruits are provided.
